Become A Presenter On Tarka

For many members the ambition to be a radio presenter or even that naff term a "DJ" is central to their reasons for becoming involved in Hospital Radio. We aim to broaden their horizons and help them consider the fuller picture of what hospital radio is actually all about.

Nonetheless to provide the best possible service to our listeners, the patients and staff of the hospital, we must aim to make our standard of presentation as high as possible whilst remembering that all presenters are volunteers.

To this end we have a structured training programme with ongoing development offered. We have to initially ensure that trainees can safely operate all of the equipment without damaging it or themselves. We then begin to teach the techniques involved in putting together an entertaining radio programme. For those who want to learn tricks of the trade, we are happy to oblige, however many just want to be able to produce a show for the listeners.

There is no fixed period for training, we tailor the programme to aptitude and ability and relate this to the amount of time someone has each week.

The training programme also includes ward visiting, ensuing that the strict security issues are dealt with correctly. Also included are matters of health and safety.

A member is welcome to train with anyone they choose, maybe they know an existing presenter? Alternatively they may choose to come along to the regular training sessions held on Monday nights from 7pm. Between 8 and 10pm trainees are given slots on air to practice their skills whilst others work off air. There is generally a highly sociable time had by all at these sessions with everyone helping each other.

Your trainer at these sessions is Simon Dass (Studio Manager), accompanied by a couple of experienced presenters. There are often other members present to help out. It is also nice to see many existing presenters who turn up periodically just to see what they can learn.

However you train, before you can be assessed to be passed as presenter, you must spend 4 shows with Simon Dass who will run through and make sure that your training has been comprehensive and will prepare you for testing.

The test consists of a half hour show using all resources such as CD, MD, Vinyl, Cart etc. and then some off line questions and answers. The test ensures that a member has a basic level of competence and from there on in can develop wider skills, much the same as a driving test. Passing does not make you the world's best!

Beyond this, we offer specific advanced training from time to time, as well as refreshers. Such subjects may include outside source feeds (OBs etc) and operating the OB unit.
